Are They just Clowning Around? Colchester Reacts To Clowns
Everyone has heard of the clown phenomenon that is occurring around the country. People dressing up as clowns at night and standing in the middle of the road, woods, or town scaring citizens. A lot of arrests have been made, however, the problem continues on. There have been clown sightings in Texas, Michigan, and North Carolina. Instagram accounts have even been made for clowns in towns here in Connecticut, such as New London. Arrests have been made, as is the case for three young girls, two 13 and one 16, in Ansonia, Connecticut. These girls were found guilty on separate cases of threatening a clown attack on a local school. These sightings and arrests are working people into a frenzy. But how far is too far?
Last week there was a post on twitter that there was a sighting near Country Place in Colchester. This sighting was reported to be fake, however, it caused quite a lot of panic in the community. People, specifically high schoolers, are freaking out over the possibility of clowns being in their area. Some have said that they are afraid to walk outside at night, while others are totally unaffected and just think the whole thing is ridiculous.
It doesn’t help that other towns around us in Connecticut have had sightings or pictures on Instagram about clowns planning to show up at surrounding high schools. This puts people more on edge seeing as they know people at the other schools who tell them about whatever sighting or picture is new.
Social media plays a huge role in how towns like Colchester are reacting. Because people see on Instagram or Twitter that there are clowns in nearby towns Colchester gets freaked out that they will be in our town soon, which eventually led to a fake tweet about a clown near Country Place.
So, should people really be freaking out? Or is everyone simply overreacting?
