Published in 2015, this movie captures the true story of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team as they investigate a story involving the Roman Catholic church hiding evidence of the molestation of children by priests and other members of the church. The journalists involved in the real life case - played by Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Michael Keaton, and Brian d’Arcy James - work tirelessly to unveil the truth that has been covered up for years to the public and survivors of the sexual abuse. This movie- rated R -is filled with a captivating storyline, breathtaking cinematography, and passionate acting, which has earned it more than 100 film awards within a year. Not meant to slander the Roman Catholic church in any way, this outstanding movie highlights the importance of journalism in an age where real news has lost its place.
Strangers Things (TV series) - Season 1 Added July 15, 2016
The crippling fear of being abducted by an unknown force is a widely known feeling in the Stranger Things universe. This show- although being filmed in 2016- takes place in 1983 in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The series features actors such as Winona Ryder and David Harbour, along with breakthrough child actors Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp. The plot revolves around a group of friends who are searching for Will (Noah) after he’s been taken by a creature referred to as the “Demogorgon” into a place they call the “Upside Down”. Throughout the first season, which is available on Netflix, panic strikes the town as more and more people begin to disappear and the sheriff frantically searches for Will while trying to discover the truth about a government created supernatural being.
New Girl (TV series) - Season 5 Added September 20, 2016
Are you a small young woman residing with 3 men in a new apartment after being dumped by your boyfriend? If so, then you’ll relate to New Girl on an eerily specific level. This show features Jess, an elementary school teacher in her 20’s played by Zooey Deschanel; Nick, a pessimistic bartender with no real goals or aspirations played by Jake Johnson; and Schmidt, a successful businessman played by Max Greenfield, who consistently donates to the “Douche Jar”. The plot follows their crazy antics in Los Angeles as they struggle with love and loss, success and failure, and making it through wedding season. Currently there are 5 seasons available to watch on Netflix, with its sixth season currently airing on Fox.
Zootopia (film) - Added September 20, 2016
You will feel every single emotion and more within the span of 2 hours by watching this animated Disney film. Published in 2016, the movie follows a bunny cop named Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) who has to prove herself to not only her rivals, such as the sly fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), but also to her own police department and Police Chief Bogo (Idris Elba). In order to do this, Officer Hopps attempts to solve the case of a missing otter, which turns out to be a larger problem than she could’ve ever imagined. Although this movie may think that this film is for children, people of all ages can find themselves smiling, laughing, and even crying at watching a character from a small town try to be someone in a big city.
American Horror Story (TV series) - Season 5 Added October 4, 2016
Even if you’re not a fan of things that go bump in the night, you’ve probably heard of American Horror Story from a friend, family member, or seeing the endless amounts of tweets on your timeline. The show features a new setting, plot line, and set of characters with each season, and is currently on its sixth. Every season has a central theme that the show revolves around, including (but certainly not limited to) an insane asylum in Massachusetts, a freak show in Florida- and most recently- a haunted hotel in California. Many actors are featured on different seasons with a new role, such as Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, who also starred in American Crime Story: The People v OJ Simpson. This show will send a shiver down your spine and feed into your fascinations of the unknown. There are 5 seasons currently available on Netflix, with the sixth presently airing on FX.
