NFL Football: Week 8 Highlights

By: Katherine Blakley Many have argued that football has surpassed baseball as America’s favorite past time. One can’t get away from it in America, even high school football games are put on TV here in Connecticut. College football is on every Saturday in the fall, followed by the professionals on Sunday. They aren’t even limited to Sunday anymore, Monday and Thursday night football have also become very popular. Here we are, about 8 weeks into the 2016 season, so let’s look at some highlight games from the past week.

Cincinnati Bengals VS Washington Redskins

On Sunday, October 30, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Washington Redskins went head to head in the last game of the International Series over in London, England. This game was for more intense than anyone really saw coming. The two teams went into overtime, a rare occurrence in the NFL. Even more rare was the outcome of the game, which actually ended in a 27-27 tie between the two teams. Bengals players spoke to the press about their disappointment with the loss, saying that “we had opportunities on both sides of the football to win the game.” One opportunity that he is talking about there occurred with 2:09 left in the game. The Bengals had the ball and were third-and-one from the Cincinnati 46 when Andy Dalton fumbled on a quarterback sneak, turning the ball over to Washington, efficiently losing any chance that they had in scoring before the game ended. They were sent into overtime, where neither teams were successful in scoring, leading to the game ending in a tie.

Green Bay Packers VS Atlanta Falcons

The 4-3 Green Bay Packers took on the 5-3 Atlanta Falcons on this past Sunday. In an incredibly close game, the Falcons came out on top 33-32. The game began with the Falcons in the lead with a field goal kicked with 9:41 to go in the first quarter. The 3-0 lead only lasted a few minutes as the Packers quickly came up with a touchdown, passing the Falcons 7-3. Atlanta then trailed the Packers until the 3rd quarter when they scored a touchdown to make the game 26-24. However, before they were able to get terribly comfortable, the Packers responded with another touchdown with about 4:00 left in the last quarter. It was a nailbiter up until the very last 30 seconds when Falcons fans went crazy from all over the world as their team scored a touchdown to put them one point ahead, ending the game 33-32 with the Falcons on top.

This weeks games were especially intense due to the closeness of not only these two games, but even more that occurred throughout week 8. What will week 9 bring us?
