Presidential Election

  By: Katherine Blakley

All we’ve been hearing about for what seems like forever now is the 2016 Presidential Election. The time to elect is finally upon us, and it is important to carefully consider what the candidate that you have chosen to support supports themselves. Here are just a few stances that the Republican and Democratic nominees, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton respectively, have taken.

Issues

Stance of Donald Trump

Stance of Hillary Clinton

Immigration

Trump: Wants to enforce our current immigration laws and restore the constitutional rule of land that the American prosperity and security depend upon.

Wants to send illegal immigrants back into the country they came from.

Wants to build a wall around our Southern border that Mexico will be responsible to pay for.

Wants to vet the applicants before they’re allowed into the U.S. to ensure that they support American values, institutions, and people

Wants to temporarily suspend immigration from countries where terrorism is most present.

Clinton: Believes that the enforcement of immigration laws must be humane, targeted, and effective.

Wants to increase the access to programs that encourage English proficiency, increase outreach, and education to help more people navigate the cost of living in America

Abortion

Trump: Pro-life

Believes that the government has the responsibility to protect the rights of the people, included the right of life.

Clinton: Pro-choice

Believes politicians have no right in a woman’s personal health decisions

Guns

Trump: Supports the Second Amendment, which states that citizens have the right to keep and bear arms.

Wants to empower law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves.

Wants to fix the background check system that is currently in place so that it works in the way that it was intended to in the first place.

Clinton: Believes that weapons have no place on the streets.

Wants to expand background checks to more gun sales, such as internet sales and gun shows. Strengthen overall background check system

Supports a law that prohibits domestic abusers from owning or buying guns and believes it should be a federal crime to buy a gun for someone who is not allowed to have one.

Taxes

Trump: Wants to reduce taxes across-the-board, especially for working and middle income citizens who receive the largest tax reductions.

Wants to ensure that the rich pay their fair share but no one has to pay so much that it destroys jobs or undermines their ability to compete.

Wants to get rid of special interest loopholes, make business tax rate more competitive to keep jobs in America.

Clinton: Believes the wealthy don’t pay enough taxes.

Wants to implement “fair share surcharge” on multimillionaires and billionaires.

Wants to close corporate and Wall Street tax loopholes

Would like to simplify/cut taxes for small businesses so that they can hire and grow their business.

Education

Trump: Wants a national goal of providing school choice to every child in poverty.

Wants to work with Congress on reforms to make colleges make an effort to reduce the cost of a college education and student debt of college in exchange for tax breaks and tax dollars.

Clinton: Wants for debt free college

Wants to modernize and elevate profession of teaching, which would include preparing, supporting, and paying teachers as if “the future of our country is in their hands.”
