Winter Driving

With winter coming, and an influx of new drivers at Bacon Academy, here’s what you need to know to stay safe on the roads this winter!

Keep a pair of gloves, snow removers, ice scrapers and a shovel if you have room in your car. This way you will always be able to clear off your car and move snow if you become stuck.

Before going anywhere, make sure your car’s mirrors, windshield, and windows are all defrosted so you can see out them clearly. Also clear all the snow off of the roof to make sure falling snow doesn’t blind drivers behind you.

Ensure your wiper blades are in working condition, and your car has plenty of windshield washer fluid. Keeping the windshield clear while you drive is crucial.

Drive slowly and do not accelerate harshly. Keep extra stopping distance between you and the next car. Tires take much longer to bring a car to a halt when there is snow and ice on the ground.

If you feel your car slipping, let off the accelerator.

Always drive with your headlights on! This helps other cars see you and may help prevent an accident.

Use low gears on hills to slow down, and avoid using cruise control. Maintain as much control as the car as you possibly can.

Last but not least, stay off the roads when winter weather hits unless you absolutely have to!

Stay safe and warm this winter!
