So, You Need A Job
Need a some cash? How about a car? Mmmm….OH what about those concert tickets that you really wanted for that one band, that’s only playing in your area for that one night?? I have a solution for you buddy, GET A JOB!
Now you might be saying in your head that you aren’t able to get a job because of your age or that your timing is not right when applying. Well fear not, because there are multiple solutions for these issues!
Getting a job is actually easier than you think. The top three things that you need to remember when applying are to: be honest, be persistent, and be confident. An employer is looking for these qualities in a potential employee. You have to keep in mind that they are trying to hire the best qualified person to fill the vacant job. These employers are entrusting their business with you, whether that’s serving with a smile or simply filing papers diligently. You need to remember that employers have to take time and effort to read through your resume and critique every part of your application.
Believe me, I know the feeling of turning in an application and waiting a few minutes wondering if you got the job. However, you have to keep in mind that the potential boss is currently looking over a numerous amount of applicants, or is busy with their own jobs. Your application time will come, it may be a matter of hours, or a matter of days, but you will get your spot.
Per se you’ve waited over a week now and are still waiting to hear back from the applicant reviewer. If this is the case, feel free to call the business and ask “What is the status of my application?” This phrase will make you come off as professional, while also showing your interest for the job. Employers may be waiting for that phone call, so if a week does go by, do not hesitate to call to confirm that you are completely interested in the job.
When applying, make sure you keep your options open and not overcrowd your number of applications. What I mean by this is, if you apply to 5 businesses in hopes of getting one of the positions, you have the potential of getting all five jobs. I would instead apply to maybe 2 of your top favorite businesses and wait the week time period before calling to see if they have filled the position or if your application has been reviewed. Chances are, you’ll get the job that you applied for from both of them, but because you didn’t apply to 5 you only have to deny one of the jobs.
If the business ends up calling you, don’t panic. That is the worst possible thing you could do! If they respond to you over the phone, act ecstatic to be a part of their team, employers want to hear the employee to be ready to work and that starts with the way you portray yourself. If they are calling to simply tell you you’ve been accepted to the interviewing process, still act ecstatic, but remember you may not have the job. You need to now prepare for your interview and make sure you are ready for any questions they may ask.
Typically, an interview will be with the manager of the store, or even the owner themselves. You want to make sure that you review the resume you sent in and think of questions that the manager may ask you about your involvement in various activities. It may also come to mind to ask questions about the business itself. If you express interest over the business (asking how it runs, the various jobs, etc) the manager will take note of what you’re saying that shows your overwhelming amount of interest in the job. In addition to all this, try to keep eye contact with the manager when they are speaking to you. Wandering eyes may come off as you saying you aren’t confident in your abilities or that you are disinterested in the job.
Jobs are an important part of life, and it starts with your teenage years. By the time you turn 16, you are able to apply to most of the jobs within your town. The benefits include: maturing, future knowledge in the particular business, future possible recommendations to jobs or schools, etc. It’s an ongoing benefit to you and your wallet when getting a job.
