Tips For Applying To College

As application deadlines approach, stress levels are high for Bacon Academy seniors who are applying to college. Here are some tips for current and incoming seniors to make the process a bit easier!

  • Write your essays (for Common App and supplemental essays that some schools require) and have them reviewed well ahead of your deadlines. This will allow you enough time to write the best essay possible.

  • Create a resume and keep it updated! It is a good idea to use Naviance for this, and create an independent one in Google Docs. This way, you always have a resume that you can use when applying to schools, jobs, internships, etc.

  • If letters of recommendation are needed for the schools you are applying to, be sure to ask teachers/mentors to write the letters well in advance of your deadlines. They are doing you a huge favor and they deserve ample time to do so! Write them a thank you note afterwards.

  • Go on tours of the schools you are interested in and do research on the academic programs offered. This will help you narrow the list of schools you are applying to.

  • Consider a gap year or semester. Many schools will allow you to defer admission for up to a year. This time could be used to gain valuable experience in a workplace.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Your guidance counselor will be more than happy to help you.

  • Submit your applications before the deadlines! Computers are not perfect and you want to have ample time to accommodate any technological difficulties.

And last, but not least,

  • Enjoy your senior year at Bacon Academy! It is the last school year you will be spending with the people you have grown up with for years prior, why not enjoy it while it lasts?
