Bacon Academy Holiday Concert

This past Thursday, December 7th, 2017, the Bacon Academy auditorium was filled to capacity to see the Bacon Academy Holiday Concert. With performances from the Bacon Academy Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, and Chamber Choir, the audience was in for a wonderful show.

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Mr. Kessler, opened the concert on an energetic note with Adrenaline Engines by Randall Standridge, followed by Ancient Visions and Thus Spoke the Raven. To kick off the holiday themed portion of the concert, A Marshmallow World and A Holiday Swing-Along were performed. Joined by many members of the 6:45 Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band completed a successful first performance of the academic year.

All Choir students, under the direction of Mrs. Cheney and accompanied by Ms. Kim Lewis on piano, started the vocal set with a beautiful rendition of Carol of the Bells. Concert Choir followed with Rise up Shepherd, S’Vivon, Christmas in about 3 Minutes, and Glow. Women’s Choir performed a variety of beautiful songs, such as Ding Dong Merrily on High, Tango to Evora, This Little Babe, and I Wonder as I Wander. Continuing the holiday theme, Chamber Choir put on a marvelous show, with Deck the Halls, followed by a legendary choral piece by Frank Tichelli, Earth Song. Wrapping up the choral section with Three Madrigals and The 12 Days of Christmas? By Straight no Chaser, Chamber Choir put on a great performance.

6:45 Wind Ensemble, opened their set with a rendition of Sleigh Ride, followed by another iconic holiday concert band song, Themes from the Nutcracker Suite. A combination of German folk songs, Frohliche Weihnachten (Merry Christmas), featured triangle and bell parts. The Lighter Side of Christmas followed, and the band feature ended with Overture to “The Messiah”. This overture was used as a prelude to the Bacon tradition combined choir and band number, Hallelujah Chorus.

Accompanied by the 6:45 Wind Ensemble, all Choir students, and a few alumni belted out the glorious lyrics that filled the auditorium. This song has always been a great way to end a festive concert.

On behalf of all the performers, I would like to thank Mr. Kessler and Mrs. Cheney for all of their selfless work to put on concerts such as these, and keeping music alive at Bacon Academy.
