After failing to take Mexico City, Mexican insurgent leader Miguel Hidalgo marched his 100,000 strong insurgent army to the bridge of Calderon, hoping to make a defensive stand against the 6,000 strong royalist army that had been in pursuit. During the ensuing battle, an artillery shell hit a Mexican ammunitions wagon, causing it to explode. This then led to panic among the insurgents, and the disbursement of the army Northwards. Throughout the battle, the Mexican troops were noted for showing little regard for tactics, but still fighting with enormous passion.
