Kiva Tag Sale and Bake Sale Run by Community Activism
On Thursday, December 7, 2017, the Community Activism class hosted a tag sale and a bake sale during all lunch waves. This event was to raise money for Kiva.org. Kiva is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help people bring themselves out of poverty. In over 83 countries, millions of entrepreneurs use their business to improve their lives.
The Community Activism class was successful in raising around $1,400 for this cause from the sale. If you want to help out and give to Kiva during your own time it’s simple! Just go to www.kiva.org! You have a few options: firstly you could donate yourself, but if you know a friend who would love to give to Kiva you can send them a Kiva gift card to use! Just go to https://www.kiva.org/gifts and click ‘buy kiva gift card’, and you can decide if you’d like to print the gift card, mail the gift card, or mail it to whoever you want to give it to! The process is simple, fill out all the information they ask you for, when you’re finished just click ‘add to cart and check out’. If you want to loan by yourself go to www.kiva.org simply click ‘lend’ in the top left, choose a category, and follow all steps after that!
Kiva is an amazing organization, and you can change a life just by making a small loan to people around the world. Good job to CA25 for raising a tots of $ for two amazing causes!

The Community Activism class also helped raise money for a school in Orangefield, Texas by selling orange ribbons for $1. Orangefield high school in Texas was severely damaged from hurricane Harvey. The students at the high school were supposed to start school on August 28th, but couldn't due to the damage done. Sixty percent of their school had water damage and it wasn't safe enough to attend. Earlier this month, Mr. Peel tried contacting the principal of Orangefield high school, Mr. Quinn. When Mr. Peel finally got in contact with him, Mr. Quinn reported that he shared the information with all the staff at the school. The Texas principal informed Mr. Peel that some of their faculty don’t even have homes, and the fact that they go to the school to teach the students is amazing. They are trying to make everything as normal as possible for students and faculty alike. The Community Activism class raised nearly $1,400, and the Bacon Academy student council matched that amount, resulted in roughly $2,800 being raised for the school in Texas, it was a big help to OHS.
