On Sunday, January 7, 2017, my friend and I went to see the highly anticipated movie Pitch Perfect 3. This final installment of the franchise picks up a few months after the Bellas win the world championships. All of them have gone their separate ways, but soon realize that their jobs aren’t as fulfilling and meaningful as performing as a Bella. The group receives an opportunity to perform for an overseas USO tour, allowing them to reunite and embark on a trip full of riff offs, competitions, and wild experiences one last time.
At first, the storyline made sense and didn’t feel too forced. The movie picked up in a good spot in regards to the previous film, as it wasn’t right after Bella graduated college, and it was not too far in the future. The film had a clear plot; however, the film did add in a specific storyline with Fat Amy and her estranged criminal father. Although the storyline was interesting and important in terms of Fat Amy’s character background and development, it was focused on far too much towards the end. The only reason I could see why it was needed in the film was to tie into what Fat Amy plans to do in the future. I feel that this storyline would have made more sense had it been introduced and developed in the previous films, as it wouldn’t feel too forced and out of place.
Personally, I think this movie was my least favorite out of the 3 films, mostly because of that one uneven storyline. That being said, the film itself was still wonderful. It contained the talented riff offs that the fans know and love so much, as well as plenty of drama and disasters caused by the Bellas, and it was a perfect ending to the Bellas’ musical journey together.
