Originally written in 1842 by Felix Mendelsshon for a performance of A Midsummer’s Night Dream, the Wedding March was first played at a real ceremony when Dorothy Carew wed Tom Daniel in 1847. However, the now-famous piece wouldn’t achieve widespread popularity until it was played at the wedding of Princess Victoria and Prince Fredrick, something Victoria’s mother (Queen Victoria) demanded, being a large fan of Mendelsshon.
