January 29, 1845 - “The Raven” is Published by Edgar Allan Poe
For those who don’t know, “The Raven” is a poem narrated by a depressed individual grieving the loss of his love, a woman named Lenore. While doing so, a Raven enters his room, and constantly repeats the word, “Nevermore”, causing the narrator to realize that he will never be able to move on from his loss, and that the memory of Lenore will haunt him for the rest of his life. The poem became popular almost instantly, making Poe a household name and giving him the nickname, “The Raven”. Despite this, he only earned approximately $9 for the piece, causing Poe to lament, "I have made no money. I am as poor now as ever I was in my life—except in hope, which is by no means bankable.”
