A Freshman’s Guide To Electives At Bacon Academy

As an incoming freshman, it can be quite overwhelming to pick electives for the upcoming year. Bacon Academy is a wonderful school and offers so many unique course options. This can be a lot to take in, especially because everyone wants to pick an elective that would be interesting to them.

In the Business/Information and Technology section of courses, there is one class open to ninth graders that you may choose to take: Intro To Business. Abigail Burke, a current freshman who took the class, recommends this course to incoming ninth graders because she believes it will pay off in the future when it comes to finding a job that works for you.

For Family and Consumer Science courses, there are plenty of options, such as Bake Shop 1 and Culinary 1. As a student currently taking Culinary 1, I can tell you that it is a fantastic course because it teaches basic skills in a proper and safe way. Clothing and Fashion is another course in the FCS department. I took this course as well and highly recommend it to students who have even the slightest interest in fashion or sewing. Hospitality is another course where you can learn about the food industry and hotel industry, along with many others. Additionally, Early Childhood, another FCS class that I am currently taking, is a very informative course that teaches you how to care for young children.

For math electives, there are two courses available to freshman. These are computer programming courses, so if you enjoy computers, especially when it comes to learning how they function, these courses are for you.

The music department offers a wide variety of course options for ninth graders. Jazz band is available for talented and devoted musicians. Percussion is available via audition, while symphonic band is another option in which a fellow student of mine, Rebecca Linane, has chosen to take and thoroughly enjoys. Rebecca plays the flute and enjoys how this course is “different from the middle school band”. Though this class is enjoyable, it is a lot of work. The last band-related class is Wind Ensemble. The singing course available is concert choir.

For Technology and Education courses, there is Architectural Engineering which is a course about 3D design. Automotive Technology is recommended for those who want to learn the basics about cars. Computer Technology is perfect when wanting to learn about fixing computers. Digital Photography is a new course for this year that will teach you all about taking photos with a camera or phone. Electronics is a course that involves creating and repairing all things that are electrical. Graphics is for people who want to learn about making stickers and the art we see in everyday life. Manufacturing introduces you to heavy duty, expensive, manufacturing tools. This course is very common among freshmen and is enjoyed by many. Robotics is a course recommended for those who love building and designing. If you have been a part of a robotics team before and enjoyed it, you will love this class . Technical Repair is another course available to freshmen, it is about repairing things. Transportation is a class all about different types of vehicles, and the science behind them. Video Productions is about learning how to film and edit, skits, short films, and movies. Woods is another design course with a bunch of different projects that are created. Lastly, there is a Yearbook Production course where students put together the year book by taking pictures throughout the year and editing them.

Lastly, there is the Visual Literacy category. Ceramics is a course offered to Freshman, this class is about pottery and anything to do with clay. Drawing 1 is a course that teaches you how to draw with all different kinds of mediums. 3-D art and Stained Glass is another course that focuses on everything in its’ title. Painting 1 is a course that teaches all forms of painting. Sketchbook Fundamentals is the last art class available to freshman. In Sketchbook you slowly fill up a sketchbook with all different forms of art all throughout the semester.

There are many options for electives to be taken freshman year. Do not fret if you don’t get into the course of your dreams, as you have four years of high school to try. Not getting into one class may mean having the opportunity to take another - and who knows, you may accidentally stumble into something you love!
