Prom 101

Prom, what a time to be alive. You’re searching for your dress, you’re looking for a hair salon, you’re trying to find a date, but where are you supposed to do all of this? When should you start? What do you need to prepare for? Well, as an experienced prom goer, I’ll tell you the ins and outs of this whole “prom thing.”

First things first, set yourself a budget. Budgeting is the most important thing about your whole experience. You don’t want to end up broke over a night where you’re supposed to have fun with your friends. Try to look at your current money situation. Then see how much your parents are willing to contribute. Don’t forget about the costs of the ticket, bus, outfit, shoes, and any other items you wish to purchase when preparing to attend your prom. Remember, don’t go overboard; but do what makes you happy.

Now that we’ve got the monetary portion down, let’s move onto the fun part: shopping. Prom dress/tuxedo shopping might seem like a grueling experience. You’re dealing with hundreds of dresses, going to multiple locations, and simply hoping you’ll find one dress (or tux). Here’s the trick: go in with a game plan. Make sure you look at Pinterest or the internet for inspiration. Find styles that you think would look good on you and even use the store’s website to create a wishlist before you go shopping. This way you are prepared and ready to spend the next 5 hours of your life trying to find the right size and style of your dress. Also, ladies, some boutiques will take down your dress style and your school name to ensure that you don’t have the same style dress for your big day.

For the ladies, make sure that you get your shoes a few weeks before the prom date in order to ensure your seamstress has enough time to alter your dress to the correct measurements. Your shoes should also be comfortable; however, you won’t be wearing them the whole night. They’re only there for photos beforehand.

On to more logistical items: how do you plan on getting to and from prom? If you’re looking to get a bus or a limousine, make sure you plan at least four months ahead. Remember, everyone else is having the same prom around the same time that you are. Chances are, there are at least 4 other proms going on the same day that you are having yours. Bus companies will fill up with reservations VERY quickly, make sure you’re the first one to the party. Pro tip: getting a larger bus will allow you divide the costs over more people.

So, we have the outfit, the money, and the transportation down….what’s left? Plan accordingly for your pictures. Make sure you coordinate with your group and your date to make sure you hit all the right places. Try to find a friend who has the most picturesque house, or go to one of the many natural attractions that will be in full beauty (hopefully) for your prom.

Timing is everything! Girls especially, plan your nail appointments, hair appointments, makeup appointments, ALL THE APPOINTMENTS. Make sure everything is cohesive and account for your travel time from each location. Try to write it all down on a piece of paper and keep a schedule on your phone. Let all your friends know what is happening because communication is key!

Alright y’all, this should be everything you need to know! It is a lot, but remember, you are supposed to have fun! I’ll let you in on a secret; everything leading up to prom is the memorable part. All the trials and tribulations, as dramatic as that may sound, will be what you remember. The dancing is too, but hey you can dance anytime. Prom is only twice in your life (unless you’re lucky and go to others).
