Young Republican Posters
Taxation is theft. Reasons to be a socialist (there are none). Freedom > Free Stuff. How far is too far when it comes to advertising for clubs at school? Mr. Peel says that he approved all of these posters because they are not propaganda; he says that they are intended to bring attention to the Colchester Young Republicans Club here at Bacon. Despite the hastily covered “Turning Point USA” logo (the distributor of these propaganda-esque posters) in the lower right hand corner, I tend to agree with the idea of allowing students to freely share their ideas around the school, and so I wholeheartedly believe that the Young Republicans are entitled to make themselves known. That being said, there is one poster in particular that I take issue with. It is not because I do not always agree with conservative ideas, it is because the content of the poster is incendiary and is a direct attack on Bacon students who take advantage of social programs.
Freedom > Free Stuff. I am sure that this poster was intended to be an attack on the socialist ideas that Turning Point USA abhors. By saying that Freedom > Free Stuff, they are suggesting that introducing social programs into America, we give up our freedom. What this poster, its creators, and its hangers fail to acknowledge is the finer, more nuanced message that this poster communicates. This poster says that you should be ashamed of taking advantage of programs like the free and reduced lunches at school, and waivers for standardized testing. Of course, this notion is absurd. Regardless, this poster makes it look as if the student body, and the administration as well, support this discriminatory rhetoric. This poster has no place in the halls of Bacon Academy.
